WILLACY COUNTY, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — City and county officials across the Rio Grande Valley are preparing for a tropical storm that is expected to bring in up to seven inches of rain over the next couple of days.

Willacy County is sharing with ValleyCentral how they are taking safety protocols to prevent accidents and keep residents safe at all times.

“We always have to prepare for the worst case scenario,” said Frank Torres, Emergency Management Coordinator for Willacy County.

Willacy County officials are coordinating with regional and state partners to ensure that drainage ditches are clean to prevent flooding in high-risk areas.

“We are also handing out sandbags to our community and working with our partners to make sure that we have resources available, should they become necessary,” Torres said.

Torres suggests residents prepare for storms that bring in heavy rainfall and strong winds.

He suggests residents prepare for storms that bring in heavy rainfall and strong winds days in advance before it is too late.

“You need to make sure that that you have enough equipment and supplies to sustain yourself for 24 to 72 hours in the event that you lose power or or anything like that,” Torres said. “Right now is the time to get everything ready.”
