ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Ector County ISD Trustees voted unanimously to allow unused or underused district facilities to be used for purposes “other than a district purpose.”

ECISD said Texas Education Code allows a school district to lease or allow use of an unused or underused facility for a purpose other than a district purpose.

In March, Trustees voted unanimously to establish an attendance boundary for Zavala Elementary, which will include students who attended Travis Elementary, meaning Travis Elementary will be repurposed.

Trustees recently identified a need for a “high-quality childcare provider for the Ector County community.” The district said several zip codes in Ector County are considered “childcare deserts” because of the lack of childcare center for the number of children between the ages of zero and five in the area.

The resolution passed on Tuesday, June 18 establishes the parameters for any future agreement to use Travis Elementary for high-quality childcare.
