To offer financial support to employees facing critical life challenges, The Bristal Assisted Living, which has locations across Long Island and elsewhere, has formed The Spark Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is designed to provide assistance in the face of hardship.

With this initiative The Bristal's aims to support its team members and their families through difficult situations that can include serious illnesses, sudden family deaths, tragic accidents, significant property damage, natural disasters and unforeseen hardship.

"We observe the powerful impact of compassion, kindness, and support daily and believe our team, who tirelessly extend these qualities to others, deserve the same in their own lives," Amy Silva-Magalhaes, chief operating officer of The Bristal, said in a news release about the initiative. "The Spark Foundation embodies our ethos of care and compassion."

Sudden economic hardships can take a toll on employee’s health and wellness, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. But organizations that establish access to emergency relief funds for employees can not only help ease that financial burden but also provide employees with a sense that they matter to their employer.

At a time when organizations offer corporate social responsibility to outside community members, the ability to offer emergency relief funds internally is a way to take care of team members experiencing a sudden hardship. And that can assist employees so that they recover more quickly, helping them work more productively, according to American Charities. Such initiatives can help organizations boost not only their recruitment efforts, but also employee retention.

And when an employer can provide that kind of assistance to its employees, it frees up nonprofit organizations and government agencies so that they can assist others in the community who are in need, according to American Charities.

The Spark Foundation will be funded through donations from employee and industry fundraisers, with an option for staff to contribute via payroll deductions. As a way to encourage a culture of giving, residents and families are invited to donate instead of giving gratuities, while partners and vendors can engage in corporate sponsorships to bolster the foundation's mission.

Demonstrating its commitment, Jericho-based B2K Development, the ownership company of The Bristal Assisted Living, has made a donation of $25,000 to help start the foundation's efforts.

Leadership at The Bristal say that the launch of The Spark Foundation underscores its devotion to its team, highlighting their organization as one that is “built on trust, compassion, and expertise, dedicated to the well-being of all its members.”
