KING — West Stokes’ recent graduate Camden Edmonds signed his letter-of-intent to play basketball at Converse University located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Edmonds considered multiple schools including Lee’s McRae University, Gardner Webb University, Lynchburg College, Catawba College, VMI and Caldwell University in New Jersey.

“I’m feeling excited and ready to go,” said Edmonds. “The school wasn’t too big, but not too small. I didn’t want to be overwhelmed with a larger school. Converse is a perfect fit for me. The coaches and players welcomed me and were really nice to me.

“I have a good chance to get some early minutes, but it’s not going to be easy. I know that going in, but hopefully I can make a big impact towards the end of the year. I’m ready to get up every day, early mornings, and do whatever I need to do.”

Edmonds sealed his legacy as one of the best basketball players in school history. He earned Mid-State 2A Player of the Year, North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association First Team All-District 11, third team All-State, All-County and played in the East/West All-Star Game.

The guard helped the Wildcats to a 22-8 record and to the third round of the state 2A playoffs. He averaged 26.7 points per game, 4.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.9 steals, and shot 39 percent from the 3-point line. Edmonds broke school records in single-game scoring with 47 points against state champion Reidsville, most career points with 1,943, single-season record of 796 points, career steals with 191, single-season steals with 88, and single-season free throw record of 11 made attempts.

“Coach (Carter) Phillips is someone who has helped me get where I am,” noted Edmonds. “Even though I only played under him for a year, I learned a lot from him. He came in at our level and with him just coming out of college he knows what it takes to play at the next level.”

Coach Phillips praised Edmonds for his leadership on and off the court.

“He is one of the best I have coached,” said Phillips. “He showed us a lot of respect and his teammates followed. I appreciate him setting that culture for us and the future of West Stokes Basketball.

“Cam is hard-working and a really good practice guy. I think he will do great at Converse. I’m excited for him and I know they are excited to get him. He fits their scheme pretty good. They like to run and play fast, and like long wings that can guard and shoot the three. Cam fits everything they were looking for. As long as he continues to work hard, he’s got a chance to get on the floor.”

Edmonds has played travel basketball with the N.C. Spartans for the past two years, and the Winston-Salem 76ers’ for two previous seasons. He plans to major in Sports Management.

Camden is the son of Kevin and Brandy Edmonds of King.

“I’m feeling excited, a little overwhelmed, and a little sad” said his mother, Brandy. “It’s going to be hard in the beginning with him not at home, but I’m excited to go watch him play.

“The school is a smaller school, an older school, and I love the fact they put so much time and effort into reaching out and recruiting Camden. They were so positive and that really meant a lot. When he saw the school for the first time and we walked into the gym and it was West Stokes colors, he looked at me and said he felt like he was home.”

Converse University is a member of the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Conference Carolinas.
