Rumors have been swirling for a long time about the beloved workplace comedy 9 to 5 making a comeback in some form. The 1980 movie stars Dolly Parton , Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as three colleagues who team up to take revenge on their arrogant, sexist boss, and though it drew mixed reviews upon its original release, it’s since become a cult classic and spawned a TV series adaptation and a Broadway musical.
A few years ago, Parton, Tomlin and Fonda were in talks to reprise their roles in a possible sequel, but the trio ended up passing on the script once it was written. Parton confirmed during an appearance on Entertainment Tonight that she and her co-stars had “dropped that whole idea,” explaining, “We never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good.”

Parton revealed in a recent E! News interview that she had a heads up about the remake years ago, back when she was working with Aniston on the Netflix movie Dumplin' in 2018.
"There was some mention she might want to do 9 to 5 , and I said, ‘Oh, that would be great,'" Parton told E! News (via USA Today ). She also made it clear that she’s on board to appear, adding: “I'm hoping they use my song and I'm hoping they might find a way to have Lily, Jane and me come back in.”
Tomlin, though, may be a harder sell—the actress was asked how she felt about the remake shortly after the announcement in April.
“I felt sort of the same way I felt about the musical. You know, part of you feels rejected,” Tomlin told People . “You think that character’s yours always. And you could reembody it.” Later in the interview, Tomlin expressed some skepticism about the remake as a project, adding: “It’s going to be tough to make [the movie] happen. My sympathies are with Jennifer and her writer, Diablo, who is a good writer.”
