ROWAN COUNTY, NC ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office has received state grant funding to create a Motorcycle Motorcade Unit.

Four new BMW motorcycles have been ordered and will arrive around December, the Sheriff’s Office says. The state funding will also cover equipment and training for deputies.

“Thanks to our local NC State Senate and House Representatives Carl Ford and Harry Warren for helping us secure 100% funding for this program,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote.

The goal of the unit is to offer funeral escorts for veterans and other Rowan County residents as well as for parades, public events, and traffic enforcement.

A used motorcycle from another agency was also purchased as a training bike. Captian We Smith was responsible for getting the program started.

“Also thank you to the Rowan County Board of Commissioners in approving the grant funding and the motorcycles,” the Sheriff’s Office continued. “Without their support and vision for law enforcement in this county these bikes would not be a possibility.”
