HCA Florida Englewood Hospital announced its recipients of the prestigious HCA Healthcare Awards of Distinction. The awards are the highest honors HCA Florida Englewood Hospital bestows upon employees, physicians and volunteers. Englewood Hospital is proud to recognize the exceptional work and dedication of these colleagues.

HCA Florida Englewood Hospital’s recipients of the hospital-level HCA Healthcare Awards of Distinction are:

    • Joseph Noah, M.D., orthopedic surgeon: Frist Humanitarian Award, physician recipient. Noah is recognized for his exceptional care and empathy for patients for both the hospital-level award and the West Florida Division award. For 33 years, he has cared for patients as an orthopedic surgeon and has performed thousands of surgeries to improve the lives of his patients. Noah is an independent member of the medical staff of HCA Florida Englewood Hospital.

    • Barbara Bonaventure, Facilities Management coordinator: Frist Humanitarian Award, colleague recipient. As the coordinator of Facilities Management for nearly 10 years, Bonaventure has handled more than 6,220 preventative maintenance work orders with an exceptional completion rate. She ensures regulatory readiness and supports the safety and operations of our hospital.

    • Maureen Picard, volunteer: Frist Humanitarian Award, volunteer recipient. Picard has dedicated over 1,400 hours to supporting the Emergency Room (ER) care teams and patients at HCA Healthcare facilities for nearly nine years. Recently, a mother came to the ER for care, and Picard entertained her toddler so our team could attend to the mother’s needs.

    • Steve Davis, RN, CCRN, Emergency: Excellence in Nursing Award, Compassionate Care recipient. Davis served as a flight nurse before coming to the ER 2½ years ago. He now serves as a charge nurse, leading by example. He is compassionate, skilled and caring.

    • Terri Campbell, RN, BSN, clinical professional development educator: Excellence in Nursing Award, Professional Mentoring recipient. Campbell serves as a role model for nurses, and models a love of life-long learning and professional development for the team. She oversees the Donna Wright Competency Fair annually to ensure that nurses have an opportunity to practice skills and learn new techniques.

    • Matthew Chowaniec, MBA.HC, BSN, RN, NE-BC: Innovators Award recipient. As the director of Surgical Services, Chowaniec works with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure exceptional surgical outcomes through preoperative education, skilled surgical care and postoperative recovery care. He recently developed an innovative approach to improve ordering supplies in coordination with Supply Chain, which is now adopted throughout the West Florida Division.

“We are proud to honor Dr. Noah, Barb, Maureen, Steve, Terri and Matt as our hospital level 2024 HCA Healthcare Awards of Distinction recipients,” said Joe Rudisill, CEO. “These extraordinary individuals honor the vision of our founders to deliver exceptional, patient-focused care to every patient who enters our hospital. Through their dedication and compassion, we can live out our mission, which is — above all else — we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.”

These caring and talented individuals will be considered for additional HCA Healthcare Awards of Distinction levels. The enterprise-level awards, the highest in the company, will be announced during a special ceremony on Sept. 24 at HCA Healthcare’s headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.

The hospital also honored 39 colleagues celebrating milestone years of service in increments ranging from five to 38 years. The first employee of Englewood Hospital was Carolyn Exelby, who joined the team before the hospital opened in 1985. Her job was to ensure that all the supplies and equipment were in place and ready for the first patient. Thirty-eight years later, she is the hospital’s Supply Chain supervisor and shared her thoughts on providing “Excellence Always” in every action, for every patient, every time.

“If you are in health care, you believe in service and excellence,” she said. “As a nurse, you want to do all you can to help your patient heal. If you are in Food Services, you want to provide the most nutritional meals possible to help your patient recover. If you are in Environmental Services, you want to make the patients’ rooms as clean and comfortable as possible and keep them safe. You strive to do your best every day, and you want to succeed. You want to be excellent.”

“The commitment to our purpose and our patients demonstrated by these colleagues over the years is remarkable,” said Joe Rudisill. “Each plays a vital role in the care and improvement of human life.”

Established in 1971, the Frist Humanitarian

Award honors outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. The awards are given annually in recognition of the caring spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA Healthcare. The Frist Humanitarian Award recognizes one employee, physician and volunteer from each HCA Healthcare facility.

HCA Florida Englewood Hospital’s knowledgeable and compassionate nurses are on the front line of patient care every day. The Excellence in Nursing Award was created in 2014 to recognize the intrinsic value of the nursing practice in accomplishing HCA Healthcare’s goal of providing the highest quality of care to the patients and the community. The award recognizes HCA Healthcare nurses who excel in compassionate care and professional mentoring.

Innovation comes in many forms and happens every day across the HCA Healthcare enterprise. The Innovators Award recognizes the pursuit of excellence in innovation through leadership, creativity and collaboration. This individual improves lives by leading a culture of unique problem solving.
