Chief Deputy John McArthur of the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office has earned a diploma from the first-ever Chief Deputies’ Leadership Institute.

The Chief Deputies’ Leadership Institute is a 100-hour, three-week course of instruction held over 12 months.

During the course, which was held in Durham, McArthur received training in a number of areas related to becoming a more effective sheriff’s administrator. Students learned proper procedures for handling officer-involved shootings and filling deputy vacancies in a sheriff’s office. They also studied leadership styles, laws related to evidence storage and disposition, and emergency preparedness in jails.

“I congratulate each of the accomplished graduates of the Chief Deputies’ Leadership Institute,” said Darren Campbell, president of the Chief Deputies Leadership Institute Association. “Chief Deputies are essential in supporting the office of the sheriff. They are a critical link between a sheriff and a sheriff’s staff, as well as the community.”

McArthur said he was “honored” to have been a member of the first Chief Deputies’ Leadership Institute. He noted that that Chowan Sheriff Edward Basnight served on the panel with other county sheriffs that developed the program for chief deputies.

“The information that I learned is incredibly useful but even more so are the connections I made with other chief deputies from North Carolina,” McArthur said, noting they’ll all be “a resource” for each other. “This training provided by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association prepared me to serve the citizens of Chowan County even better in the future. I look forward to seeing the benefits for the Sheriff’s Office and for my community.”
