Edward Gingerich was driving a horse-drawn carriage at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday along County Road 5 in Marion County when he lost control, according to a news release from the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The carriage struck the side of an eastbound CSX locomotive and the impact threw Gingerich to the ground, according troopers. Gingerich died at the scene.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. A spokesperson said one horse was attached to the carriage and suffered a cut along its front leg, but survived.

The Highway Patrol said the railroad crossing was equipped with lights and gates.

CSX said it was notified about the crash just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

"CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy, and we will work on scene to support local law enforcement as they continue to investigate," the company wrote in a statement.
