(WYTV)- Benign prostatic hyperplasia, translation: a man’s enlarged prostate gland.

It is incredibly common, especially among men over age 40.

It’s not prostate cancer, but an enlarged prostate can cause a man’s life to change in uncomfortable ways. It can give him a “going” problem. He’s always needing to go.

“I like to tell patients that the prostate is kind of like an orange with a straw going right through the middle of it. And as we age, the prostate gets larger and larger and the straw going through the middle gets compressed by the tissue of the prostate, makes it harder for the bladder to push urine through the urethra,” said Scott Cheney of the Mayo Clinic.

The symptoms can include frequent urination, a weak urine stream and a tough time emptying the bladder. Men constantly get up at night to use the bathroom and they’re always looking for a restroom wherever they go. A tip: avoid excess fluids, especially caffeine and alcohol, and especially before bed.

Got a “going” problem? Your doctor may send you to a urologist.
