A film slowly creeping up on people's radar is Longlegs , starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage from the director of Gretel & Hansel .

Oz Perkins's fourth feature is heading to theaters next month, and as early reactions roll in across social media, curiosity is piquing for what people say is "the most terrifying film of the year".

    The official synopsis reads:

In pursuit of a serial killer, an FBI agent uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.

Longlegs hits theaters on July 12, and people who have already seen the film warn audiences that it is "100 hundred minutes of unrelenting, intense, and overwhelming dread".

Other critics are saying the film feels as though it was "forged in Hell by Satan" with a performance from Nicolas Cage that is "blood-chilling".

You will want to place Longlegs at the top of your summer watchlist after reading the reviews from critics who, so far, have the film rated 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

EJ Moreno for Flickering Myth has even dubbed the film "the scariest of the decade".

    Longlegs Review Roundup

    • Slashfilm: It's the most terrifying horror movie of 2024, a film that gets under your skin and may never get out
    • IGN Movies: There are moments when Longlegs feels like a movie you've seen before, but with an evil filter laid over it: This is both a weakness and a strength, as Perkins' horror surrealism renders the familiar strange, and the strange familiar.
    • Bloody Disgusting: Longlegs gets under your skin and stays there, immersing you so thoroughly in the repulsive, discomforting nature of evil through terrifying imagery and a tactile atmosphere that it's unshakable.
    • Inverse: Longlegs is Perkins' trademark aesthetic at max volume, lingering in your thoughts, under your skin, and in the pit of your stomach well after it's over.
    • Santa Monica Mirror: Longlegs is a mesmerizing serial killer tale that swallows the viewer whole. The feeling of being inside the head of a serial killer or an intense FBI agent has never been so enrapturing and seductive.
