A woman on Reddit has recently posted a story explaining why she’s grateful for the name her parents didn’t choose.

The poster shared her parents had an interesting name picked out , until they were persuaded to change it to something more traditional . She said she was born 2 weeks late, and her parents still hadn’t decided on a name.

That’s when they turned to the hospital wristband for inspiration.

“My hospital wristband said ‘Baby Girl [My Last Name],’ and in her postpartum state, my mom started to like it,” the Reddit user said.

Thankfully, her grandma vetoed the name, so they chose something else. People in the comments recounted stories of meeting people with the name Baby Girl.

One commenter said: “I was in the hairdressers when a group of women from the local traveller site came in, and one of them had a child called Baby Girl. I did later ask the salon owner, my friend, if it was a nickname, but nope - that was the kid's actual name.”

The original poster replied: “I wonder if she goes by something else as an adult, or if she will. What do you even go by? Not baby, not girl, maybe her middle name if she has (a normal) one? Lol.”

Some commenters shared that people they knew had the name baby, simply because the parents didn’t change it in time for the birth certificate to be finalized.

“My 3rd grade teacher's dad was named baby because his parents didn't change it in time. He told us all about how he had to change his name when he was 17 because he didn't want to be Baby [surname] when he applied to colleges. I don't know why he or his parents didn't do it earlier.”

TIME Magazine reported that in 2012, 4 million children were assigned the generic name “Babygirl” or “Babyboy” because their parents didn’t immediately choose a name. Reasons for that sometimes stem from a parents’ indecision, or sometimes a baby’s time in intensive care prevents them from finalizing their name.
