AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Amelia County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of scam text messages which appear to be from the county magistrate’s office.

According to a Tuesday, June 18 post on the Amelia County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook, a scam attempt was reported to the office after a person received a text message that appeared to be from the county magistrate’s office.

The text prompted the person to click on a link that was included in the message, which the sender claimed would allow them to receive a reduced rate on the second half of their personal property tax for 2024.

The Amelia County Sheriff’s Office is asking those who receive these messages to disregard them as they are part of a scam to obtain personal information. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the magistrate’s system is not involved with personal property or real estate taxes in Virginia.
