Avoiding This Potentially Fatal Activity When It's Storming in Louisiana

Louisiana is a state where there seem to be a thousand weather extremes. One minute you are driving down the road during a massive thunderstorm, and the next minute, the clouds have moved along and the sun is shining.

When a storm pops up in Louisiana, we know the safest thing to do is to get inside and away from the weather. But, did you know that the CDC actually has warnings about things not to due inside during a thunderstorm?

CDC Warns Us to Avoid Something That Could Be FATAL

When the showers are coming down, and we are being treated to a cacophony of thunder and a lightning show, staying inside is the safest bet. During a thunderstorm avoiding lighting is obviously the safest thing you can do, as the National Weather Service says it poses the greatest risk for harm.

When you check into what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has to share about lighting, you might be blown away. About one-third of the people who were injured by lightning were inside at the time they were hit by lightning.

Did you know there is “ Lightning Awareness Week ” and a Lightning Safety Council? Who knew?

Lightning Safety Council has a great line, “When thunder roars, go indoors”. You should stay out of the rain, swimming pool, etc., and now we know more.

And what about that “ old wives’ tale “, don’t bathe or take a shower when it’s raining. Well, it’s actually true.

According to both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Weather Service , YOUR MOM and YOUR MAWMAW WERE TELLING THE TRUTH!

Electricity can pass through the plumbing in your home and electrocute you. They say absolutely avoid it!

Other things they recommend you not do during a storm or lighting storm:

• Standing near windows, doors, porches, and concrete
• Doing dishes
• Touching any electronic equipment connected to an electrical outlet
• Using corded phones

Wow! With all these things they recommend we not do during a thunderstorm with lighting, it almost sounds like they want us to just lie down on the couch! I understand not standing near windows, etc, but not touching any electronic equipment that’s plugged in, seems crazy. And, most of us do not have a phone with a cord.

But, I don’t think we should try to test fate with any of the stuff above.
