James Hetfield Names Two Metallica Songs He Wants Band To Play More Live

With some classic rock and metal bands, when it comes to the live performance they stick to their hits. While most audiences obviously want to hear a band’s most well-known songs, die hard fans grow tired of hearing the same set.

Metallica has always been good at rotating songs from their entire catalog in and out of their setlist. Sure, you’re going to hear “Enter Sandman” and “One,” but on occasion they’ll also break out deep cuts like “Bleeding Me,” “Ride The Lightning” and several other tracks loved by their fans. Even better is that the band almost always posts pro-shot live videos when they do break out a deep cut.

In a recent episode of “The Metallica Report” podcast, frontman James Hetfield was asked if there are tunes he wishes Metallica would play more live. Both tracks he mentioned come from the band’s “… And Justice For All” record. “‘The Frayed Ends of Sanity,’ most of the time, or ‘Dyers Eve,’” Hetfield said. “Those are the two. We have played them in the past, and they’ve come up here and there. I think it’s just more of a… I don’t know, a talent check with each other? Like, can you play this song?”

Metal Injection researched the number of times each song has been performed live. “The Frayed Ends Of Sanity” has only been played 12 times. “Dyers Eve” has been performed 35 times.

Hetfield was also asked if there’s any songs the band won’t do on a live stage. “I would love to have played every song besides playing it in the studio,” he said. “Yeah, I hope there’s a point and a place for every song before we’re done.”
