Under the circumstances I feel ok. Sore and tired and really shook up. I real really hate cancelling show but the doctor said no rock for a couple of weeks.”

James Chance, the bandleader and singer-saxophonist of influential punk-funk groups including the Contortions and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, died yesterday in New York after a long period of illness. His brother David Siegfried, organizer of a GoFundMe for the late artist, did not disclose a cause of death, but wrote that the family joined him in his final days to share “memories of his time in music, childhood and family.” James Chance was 71 years old.

It’s rough out there for lots of indie rock bands, but Austin’s Good Looks have really been through the shit. The day after they released their 2022 debut, Bummer Year, guitarist Jake Ames was nearly killed in a hit-and-run. The band put off touring while he slowly recovered, and when they did finally hit the road, their van caught fire and they lost everything: gear, instruments, laptops, merch, personal effects, everything. A less committed group might have taken either of these tragedies as a sign from the universe, but to their credit Good Looks are a foolhardy lot. While they don’t address those trials on their follow-up, Lived Here for a While, they play like their lives depend on it.

Chvrches’ Iain Cook has made a new remix of the Cranberries’ 1993 single “Linger.” Listen to the new track below. According to a press release, Cook made his new track by deconstructing the original and reassembling it, keeping intact the vocal melody of the late singer Dolores O’Riordan. “When I got the stems, the first thing I did was listen to Dolores’ vocal tracks in isolation,” he explained. “Hearing those for the first time was magical; I was shocked by the intimacy and emotion in her performance. The first thing I did was to sit with the vocals on their own and rework the chords on piano. I often find that this is a great starting point with remixes as it helps you to shake off some associations that you have with the song, and this is a song which I’ve known and loved for over 30 years.”
