As parents, we all want our kids to feel safe and secure. We're quick to tell them there's no such things as monsters, and we're always there to comfort them when they wake up from a bad dream. But the truth is that sometimes when little ones get scared, their reactions are so cute it's hard not to laugh!

In a video posted on June 18, a mom is carrying her baby girl through a Party City. The little one is perfectly happy until something very unexpected happens...her sister puts on a clown mask. In that moment, a lifelong fear of clowns is activated!

"My poor baby," wrote @zoeynicoleeeee . She was instantly terrified ! This was probably the most horrifying thing she ever experienced in her young life. Commenters couldn't get over her enormous reaction.

"She clutched her pearls and your pearls," wrote jm.

"That pure terror in her scream," wrote Briauna.jade.

"The way she gripped your strap bless her," wrote kadds.x.

This video is a perfect example of one of those moments when you feel really bad for a kid...but it's also sort of funny because they're so adorable! Of course, it's never worth trying to scare a baby on purpose just to get a response.

One thing's for sure — this kid isn't the only one to think clowns are spooky!

Why Are Babies and Kids Afraid of Clowns?

Some psychologists believe that part of the reason why kids are afraid of clowns is that we "cannot read genuine emotion on a clown’s face," according to the Child Mind Institute.

“'When you take away our ability to read someone’s expression, it’s disturbing because we don’t know what they’re feeling — are they happy, sad, angry? — what to expect, or how to react,' explains Jerry Bubrick, a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating children with anxiety at the Child Mind Institute."

Sometimes it's a birthday party that kicks off a child's fear of clowns.

“'Fear of clowns really starts at a very young age, as young as four or five,' Dr. Bubrick explains. 'What usually happens is a child is invited to a birthday party, and when they get there, with no preparation from parents, they see a freaky-looking dude wearing a wig, and big shoes, and a weird outfit, and a big nose, talking in a weird way, doing weird things.'"

While some kids find clowns funny, their unpredictability can make anxious types uneasy . Perhaps unsurprisingly, fear of clowns is one of the most common phobias in children.

Something to keep in mind before your next trip to Party City!
