Is your garage door showing a bit more sunlight around the corners than you'd like? It might be time to replace those old, worn-out rubber seals and make sure your garage is sealed up nice and tight. Lucky for you, TikTok creator and professional garage door installer Joe Conti from Precision Garage Door is here to help. He walks us through a step-by-step guide for changing out your own rubber seals so you can get the job done in no time.
How Do You Know If Your Garage Door Seal Needs To Be Replaced?
First things first, how do you know if your garage door seal needs replacing? Well, besides the obvious sunlight peeking through, there are a few telltale signs. If you notice any drafts, water seeping in after a rainstorm, or an unusual amount of dirt and pests finding their way into your garage, it's probably time for a new seal. Joe points out that there are several different kinds and types of rubber seals that you can get for your garage door, so make sure you choose one that is the right size for your door.
Once you've got your new seal ready, start by carefully sliding out the old rubber seal. Begin pulling it out from one end. Depending on how old and worn your seal is, it might not come out in one piece, so you might want to be cautious during this step. It's a bit like peeling a stubborn sticker off your car window—patience is key. After you've removed the old seal, it's time to start sliding the new one into place, following the same track as before.
To make the installation a bit easier, Joe shares a handy tip. Spray a little bit of glass cleaner directly onto the bottom rail before you start sliding in the new seal . This will give it a bit of a glide on the metal and should make it easier to tug into place. Think of it as adding a bit of lube to loosen things up—makes everything smoother and quicker.
Finally, when your new seal is mostly in place, cut the end so you have about two to three inches sticking out, then tuck that end in. This extra length gives you something to grab onto next time you need to go through this whole process again. It's like leaving a little tab on a roll of tape—future you will thank you for it.
And there you have it! With Joe's expert guidance, changing the worn seals on your garage door is not only doable but also a breeze. Sealing up those pesky gaps will keep your garage more protected from the elements, reduce energy waste, and make your space cozier and more efficient.
