In 2019, Michael Jordan added a title that perhaps means more to him than being called the greatest basketball player of all time.
On May 14, 2019, Michael welcomed his first grandchild when his daughter Jasmine gave birth to Rakeem Michael Christmas. With that, the six-time NBA champion officially became a grandfather. However, while Jasmine swears that MJ is the best grandfather ever, she also admits that he has a hard time accepting the title.
“He had to warm up to it,” Jordan's daughter revealed during an interview with ESSENCE . “At first, he wanted my son to call him ‘Mike’ or ‘Michael,’ and I’m like, ‘Dad, we’re not doing this. You have to accept the grandpa title. It is what it is.'”
MJ is a softie to Keemie
Title aside, Michael has been the greatest dad to Jasmine's son. While Keemie was growing up during the pandemic, MJ defied the social distancing rules by always keeping in touch via FaceTime or Zoom.
Jordan finally had the opportunity to introduce Keemie to the world during a 2022 interview with Craig Melvin for NBC News. MJ shared how fun it is being a grandfather and that he enjoys holding and playing with the little guy.
"He is such a softie when it comes to my son," said Jasmine. "And he definitely has him wrapped around his finger already. So, he is just the most incredible grandfather you can imagine. He'll definitely bring that competitive side out once my son starts playing sports, but until then, he's soft."
The Air apparent?
Jasmine is Michael's only daughter from his first marriage to Juanita Vanoy. She has two older brothers - Jeffrey and Marcus , but among the three of them, she was the first to deliver a third-generation Jordan and the possible heir to MJ's throne.
While Jasmine pursued a college degree, the two sons chased their basketball dreams. While both played NCAA basketball, neither was close to making the NBA. Marcus was considered the better basketball player than Jeffrey, but the closest he was to a ring was with Larsa Pippen.
Meanwhile, Keemie's dad is former NBA player Rakeem Christmas, who is listed at 6'9''. With Rakeem's genes and MJ's DNA flowing through his veins, Jasmine's son could become the next Jordan in the NBA, something that her brothers Jeffrey and Marcus could not accomplish.
