On June 4, 2024, the Dare County Planning Board met to consider a special use permit for a home occupation in Colington, part of unincorporated Dare County.

Rachel Sanchez submitted an application for the special use permit with the intent to produce and package baked goods at 113 Hickory Ridge Court in Colington.

She proposes to convert her 240 square foot garage located on the property for production and packaging. The business will be classified as a “home processor” by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She will be the only employee.

Her business is named “Sandbar Sweets.” Sanchez will deliver finished products or have customers make appointments to pick up orders between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Planning Board concluded unanimously that the conditions listed in the draft permit were reasonable and appropriate and forwarded the application to the Board of Commissioners for consideration.
