NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — A New Orleans native has just been confirmed as Thailand’s honorary consul in Louisiana by the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington D.C.

According to New Orleans & Company, the company’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Mark Romig, received the appointment as honorary consul on Thursday, June 20.

The role was given in part on account of his more than four decades of experience in international relations and “commitment to fostering bilateral relations between Thailand and the United States.”

Romig’s experience includes nearly a decade as president and CEO of New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Corporation prior to its merge with NOCO as well as his current role as the co-chair of the media, PR and branding subcommittee for the Super Bowl LIX host committee.

Thailand is reportedly the United States’ oldest treaty ally in Asia, with diplomatic relations going back 191 years. Romig, being a “key liaison,” will be acting to foster this relationship by acting as a point of contact for Thai citizens, facilitating consular services within Louisiana and assisting in the promotion of Thai interests.

“I am looking forward to serving and promoting the unique relationship that the Kingdom of Thailand and the United States enjoy, and representing Thailand throughout Louisiana,” said Romig. “The people of Thailand and Louisiana share much in common – a population of passionate citizens, a rich history and culture, amazing cuisine and generous hospitality.”
