Who said IKEA furniture has to be basic and boring? Sure, that might be how it starts out, but the team at Frenchi Australia on TikTok has turned the humble Kallax unit into something you’d expect to find in a chic country cottage. Using nothing more than some pallet wood and a bit of creativity, they’ve created a piece that's not only functional but absolutely stunning. If you've been looking for a way to spice up your living space, this DIY project could be just what you need.

Who says your IKEA furniture has to look basic? 😍 Steal this KALLAX to country-chic storage bench hack from Frenchic Fan Kayleigh (over at @do.it.yourself.mum) and give your lack-lustre laminate a more luxe look with a fresh new function! Kayleigh used palette boards around the base, scaffolding boards for the top and brought the piece to life with our neutral quirky khaki shade 'Funky Dora' from the self priming and self sealing The Lazy Range. 🤩 Finishing the bare wood off fabulously with Frenchic 'Browning Wax' to add an aged, rustic look! Who's feeling inspired? We certainly are! 🥳 ℹ️ Did you know? All the Frenchic ranges are suitable for use on glossy surfaces like laminate. The glossier a surface, the more thoroughly you will need to sand as part of your surface prep - this will ensure an effective 'key' to maximise adherence. #FrenchicAustralia #Frenchicpaint #paintslikeadream #bestpaintintheworld #chalkpaint #hastobeFrenchic #Upcycling #BeforeAndAfter #reno #paint #transformation #furniturepaint #budgetdecor #DIYTips #kallaxhack #furniture #ikeahack

The creators opted for a smaller Kallax unit to begin with, but you can easily adapt this project to fit a larger Kallax or even a Billy bookcase if you're looking for more storage space. The first step involves sanding down the edges of the Kallax. This step isn’t strictly necessary, but it does make the subsequent steps a lot easier. Smooth edges mean everything fits together better, which is key when you’re about to attach wood to your furniture.

Next up, they grabbed two boards of reclaimed pallet wood . Pre-sanding these boards ensures that any rough edges are smoothed out, making them easier to work with and more aesthetically pleasing. They used wood glue to attach the boards to the top of the Kallax, followed by screws to make sure everything stayed in place. It’s a simple but effective way to add a rustic touch to the otherwise minimalist unit.

Once the top was secured, they moved on to the base. More pallet wood was used to create a new base around the bottom of the Kallax. This not only lifts the unit slightly off the floor, adding a bit of height, but also ties the look together. A simple but clever touch that brings the whole piece to life.

Sanding was next on the agenda. Everything, including the Kallax itself, got another good sanding to ensure a smooth finish. Then came the fun part—finishing touches. They used browning wax on the pallet boards to bring out the natural grain and add a smooth finish. The Kallax unit itself was painted a muted greige, a far cry from its original stark white. The new color works beautifully with the pallet wood, creating a cohesive and stylish look.

The final result is nothing short of stunning. The once-basic Kallax has been transformed into a cute country-chic storage bench that’s anything but boring. It’s a perfect example of how a bit of creativity and some pallet wood can go a long way in turning ordinary furniture into a standout piece.
