The Jonathan Hunt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Surry County has selected students of local high schools as DAR Good Citizens as part of an annual recognition program.

They include Hannah Khuri of Mount Airy High School; Kaylee Edwards, North Surry; Pricilla Seawell of East Surry; Kaylin Moody, Surry Central High School; Sophia Welborn, Elkin High; Daniel Shinault, Millennium Charter Academy; Jay Mitchell of Surry Early College; and Madelyn Holleman of Yadkin Early College.

As its name implies, the DAR Good Citizen program recognizes exemplary young people who exhibit qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools and communities and seeks to encourage and reward those attributes.

Included are dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

The Good Citizen program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools.

Students selected were honored during recent end-of-year awards events at their respective campuses, which included the presentation of a certificate and pin to each.

Each Good Citizen also can choose to participate in a scholarship portion of the program. Application packets for the students are then judged, with the winner receiving a monetary award during an annual Christmas tea of the Jonathan Hunt Chapter based in Elkin.

Madelyn Holleman of Yadkin Early College is this year’s chapter winner, according to Faye Haas, vice regent of the Jonathan Hunt group who chairs its Good Citizens Committee.

The winner’s application packet is sent for further judging and the final winner in the country will be presented with a $10,000 scholarship at the National DAR Continental Congress, Haas advised.
