CAMERON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A big foot hunt and fireworks are just a small part of the Weekend in the Wilds in Cameron County this July.

The weekend kicks off Friday, July 5, when Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library opens up for its annual used book sale. At 5 p.m. PHASER will be live and you can enjoy fire-roasted hot dogs and non-alcoholic slushies (Free for the first 100, according to the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce). The chamber will also provide free popcorn.

“The chamber wanted to kick off Weekend in the Wilds with a totally free event for teens and families”, explains chamber director Tina Solak.

If that’s not enough, Mountaineer Search & Rescue will hold their popular “Big Foot Hunt” at daybreak. The fundraising hunt is $5 for a “hunting license” to head out and find the big wooden feet they’ve hidden in the area. Proceeds go to the group for new radios.

Vendors will fill the sidewalks along Fourth Street. They’ll include food, children’s activities, artwork, crafts and feature county non-profits hoping to raise funds and awareness. The Firequacker Duck Derby will be held at 2 p.m. There will also be pick-up cornhole games for those interested in playing.

What is the “Big Foot Hunt” in Cameron County?

Saturday night will see a free fireworks show at the Cameron County High School Football Stadium.

Events will continue Sunday, July 7, at Smoker’s Insane Terrain Offroad Park. A crash-and-dash car race is planned through the mud. Spectators are encouraged to bring chairs and sit on the hillside overlooking the track. It is a free event unless you request a pit pass.

Solak and the chamber thanked those involved by donating so the event could stay free. They include:

    • Smoker Logging
    • Cameron County Community Chest
    • Emporium Food Market
    • Rich Valley Wines
    • Cameron County Fair Association
    • Emporium Volunteer Fire Department
    • Emporium Borough
    • Emporium Water Company

The Chamber said this year’s event is in memory of Steven Smoker. Smoker was a businessman and philanthropist who, with his brothers, brought numerous items to the residents including the giant Christmas Tree, Light up Night, Halloween Extravaganza, return of mud runs and the ice skating rink. Smoker died earlier this year.
