Ralph Lauren Debuts Their Summer 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony Uniforms: See Photo  Announcement

A large part of the Olympics is the uniforms. From the shiny leotards gymnasts wear, to the red, white and blue bathing suits the swimmers compete in, seeing which uniforms the athletes wear during the Games is almost as fun as watching them showcase their talents – and the first uniform viewers see are the ones that every single athlete wears in the opening ceremony. It is the only time throughout the Games that every single person is wearing the same thing, and this year's 2024 Summer Olympic uniforms were designed by none other than Ralph Lauren.

What does the new 2024 USA Olympic uniform look like?

This year’s USA Olympic uniform is once again a blue blazer designed by Ralph Lauren. This is the fifth time Ralph Lauren has designed the summer Olympic uniform, and it is also the fifth time that the company has chosen to style the team in a navy blue blazer. The Paris blazer is single-breasted and lined with red-and-white grosgrain ribbon trim. It also has the Ralph Lauren logo on the front of it.

“For me, sport has always been a timeless source of inspiration. It’s a spirit deeply rooted in our heritage and in the hearts of all the athletes that have trained so tirelessly to compete in this year’s Olympic Games. It is such an hono r once again to support Team USA. Your hard work, determination, and passion continue to inspire us all,” Ralph Lauren wrote in an Instagram post.

Jamal Hill, a Paralympic swimmer who won a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Games, showed her love for the uniform, saying, “It’s like business up top, party down below . I like that it combines that professional look with a level of relaxedness. Like we don’t actually have anything to prove.”

This uniform will be worn by 1,200 different athletes, all with different body types. To accommodate that and all the alterations that might need to be made, Ralph Lauren revealed, “We put tailors on the ground in Paris.”

Both the male and female athletes will wear the blazer, with a light blue and white striped shirt underneath. They will style it with faded light blue jeans and white bucks style shoes. The male athletes, however, will wear navy ties as well.

“The directive we get is to have the athletes look like ambassadors, to have a certain sense of formality and to feel comfortable,” David Lauren, the chief branding and innovation officer of Ralph Lauren, explained.

The history of the Summer Olympic blazer

The navy blue blazer first appeared in 2008. It was single-breasted and had white buttons to match. That year, it was paired with a white newsboy cap and white trousers.

In 2012, the blazer was once again navy blue, but this time, it was double-and single-breasted. Then, it had a navy beret, white pants or skirt, and a red, white and blue scarf thrown on with it.

Four years later, in 2016, the blazer was single-breasted, with a red, white, and blue striped T-shirt underneath it. It was worn with white skinny jeans. However, many people compared that year's uniforms to the Russian Flag, causing a lot of controversy.

The most recent blazer was worn in the 2020/2021 Summer Olympics. That one was also navy and had a blue-and-white striped tee shirt underneath it. The athletes wore it with dark blue jeans and a mask due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The Team USA collection

Ralph Lauren also announced that they will, again, be releasing a collection of shirts, jackets and hats that are available for purchase on their website , writing, “The dynamic energy of #Paris2024 inspires sporty graphics , bold color-blocking, and classic stripes in America’s signature palette of red, white, and blue.”
