Home gardeners everywhere know just how much damage a single, solitary slug can do when it gets lose in  your garden. They can make short work of the fruits and veggies you've worked so hard to grow every season, and they can absolutely demolish leafy greens in a single evening.

But, you don't have to resort to harmful or dangerous chemicals when it comes time to keep these slimy garden pests at bay. Instead, you may be able to use something from the very garden you wish to protect to keep them from damaging anything else you have growing.

Take a look at how this one gardener does it, and reconsider everything you know about keeping slugs away from your prized fruits and veggies.

It sounds like @gardenfrenzy swears by their all natural pest control method when it comes to keeping slugs out of the garden, which requires them to grow a few extra onions for the slimy crowd.

While we've always heard beer used as a go-to when it comes to defense against slugs, this idea actually has its merits (and probably costs less than supplying the neighborhood slugs with their own six-pack of brewskies once a week).

While we like this idea it does have some critics.

One person commented on how the slugs hadn't seemed to shy away from her more odorous crops. "This year I noticed snails and slugs start eating onions," they wrote. "Yes they eat onions as well."

Another person suggested that the OP add coffee to their plant spray, since they've had luck with this in the past.

And yet a third person shared an interesting tip that we had to Google, saying that the onion shouldn't be sprayed anywhere near the tomatoes, lest the OP wanted to lose her crop. According to our research, that's only if you have thrips .

Cleaning Your Garden Can Help With Slugs

According to one garden pro , the best thing you can do to combat these slimy visitors is to ensure that that your garden is free of weeds and debris. Apparently, they like to take refuge under these items during the heat of the day to avoid drying out in the sun. So removing those items, or at least keeping them far away from the plants you'd like to protect, should go a long way in keeping slugs from destroying your crop.

Afterall, if they have to make a super long trip to get there, they may be more likely to move on to somewhere that they can grab a quick bite without as much effort!

    Try Onion for Slug Control

While the OP had their critics, this does seem like a low cost/high reward idea, so we're willing to give it a try. Who knows, it may become our favorite way to keep pests from noshing on all the food we're growing for ourselves!
