Eversource wins earns 96th annual Edison Award for streamlining transmission, distribution inspections

The energy company Eversource won the highest honor in the electric power industry this week when it took home the 96th Edison Award from the Edison Electric Institute (EEI).

This was owed to its SmartInspect platform – a cloud-enabled mix of advanced image recognition and AI algorithms that helped to streamline inspections of its transmission and distribution lines. Eversource credited it with aiding efficiency and accuracy, centralizing data collection and analysis, and providing automatic identification of potential system concerns.

Since its development, SmartInspect has been used to undertake circuit patrols across a three state territory, saving Eversource hundreds of hours compared to traditional methods. It has successfully identified areas with broken animal protection, vegetation encroachment and broken or cracked crossarms, among others.

The Edison Award was presented during EEI 2024, the institute’s annual meeting and forum. EEI represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies and dozens of international electric companies.
