Bob Nutting says Pirates have resources to make playoff push

While they’re still two games under .500, as of Friday afternoon, the Pirates are right in the thick of the Wild Card hunt.

A huge reason for that is the good starting pitching the team has gotten from Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Mitch Keller and more.

National MLB insiders like Buster Olney and Jeff Passan believe the Pirates will be dangerous and won’t be a team other clubs want to play, because of the pitching staff.

The big thing hindering the Pirates from breaking out right now, appears to be the offense. That’s something Pirates owner Bob Nutting acknowledged to reporters on Friday while debuting the team’s new corporate sponsor patch, Sheetz.

The Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles was one of those reporters on hand when Nutting talked about making moves to make the team better.

Nutting said that General Manager Ben Cherington will have the resources to go out and spend for a player and that he thinks moves could happened well before the trade deadline at the end of July.

“I’m not at all sure that we won’t have opportunities well in advance of the deadline,” Nutting said to Hiles. “I think we should be prepared to move early. I think we should be prepared to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. I know Ben has that flexibility to look across a broader range of alternatives, options but also a timeline of when it makes sense to strike.”

Nutting says their current lineup needs to be better at offensive output and that Cherington is also free to make moves to improve the team.

With the Pirates in the Wild Card race, Nutting says Cherington has the means to go out an improve the team. Not only for this season but the future.
