Ohio wildlife experts say give black bears plenty of space and enjoy the sighting

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) — Black bears are on the move in Belmont County.

One was killed by a vehicle on I-70 outside St. Clairsville recently.

Two others have been spotted in two different communities, one on the riverfront and another in the western part of the county.

People often feel they should report the bear’s presence to a law enforcement officer or a game warden.

Sgt. Tom DeVaul with the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department says there’s no need to call out the authorities.

He says no agency needs to be informed.

His advice: Give the bear plenty of space and enjoy the sighting.

The young males are traveling, looking for their home ranges. Generally, they’re one to two-year-old male bears. They are scavengers; they are herbivores. But like any animal, if it is cornered or it feels threatened, it may defend itself. So, in the event that you do see one, stay at a safe distance. Enjoy the moment because you’re not gonna see this every day.”

Sgt. DeVaul says bears can swim the river.

He says about 20 years ago, a black bear walked across the Moundsville Bridge from Marshall County to Belmont County.

He says if a bear is in danger or if it’s endangering others, then it’s time to call 911.

But if it’s just going about its business, leave it alone and watch.
