Your whole life changes when you welcome a human child into the family, especially if you're already a mom to a dog. People warned me that I might not love my dog quite as much as I did before I had baby, but I'm happy to report that those people were wrong. Not only do I love my dog as much as I ever have, but maybe even a little bit more, after having the opportunity to see the relationship between her and my daughter grow over the years. She's my little girl's ultimate BFF and protector.
They've spent countless lazy afternoons cuddled up on the couch or in bed watching Disney movies together since my kiddo was born four years ago, and this TikTok video is giving me major flashbacks. It looks like the dog and the toddler here are going to enjoy the same kind of bond.
In this sweet video shared by Jenna Wells on Friday, June 14, we can see this little lady sitting on the couch with her German Shepherd , and we can hear the end of Toy Story playing on the TV as they are totally cozied up together.
At one point, the dog even puts his head in his baby's lap as she pets him. This is too cute, and I hope this mom knows just how lucky she is to have caught an adorable moment like this on camera!
Of course, commenters were freaking out over just how adorable this footage is. One person wrote, "Gentle child with a dog who clearly put himself there with her. And an adult supervising the sweet interaction."
It's true. You're doing a great job raising them both, mama!
Why Do Dogs Protect Toddlers and Babies
It makes sense that dogs would have an instinct to protect puppies who are part of their "pack," but as it turns out, that instinct also translates over to tiny humans who they also feel are a part of their pack.
Because dogs really are such intelligent creatures, they can sense that the little ones in their lives are the most vulnerable in the pack and need their protection the most. Between babies' appearance, sounds, and smells, they can easily tell they're different from the older humans they are familiar with.
That doesn't mean that babies and toddlers should be left with dogs unsupervised — or that you shouldn't train your dog to be gentle with your baby and teach your baby how to behave around your dog as they get older.
If it helps, I've noticed that positive reinforcement works pretty well with both toddlers and dogs. Who wants treats?
