Little Sioux River near Cherokee expected to crest soon, again on Monday

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — According to Cherokee County Emergency Management, the Little Sioux River near Cherokee is expected to crest again on Monday.

According to officials, the is expected to crest for the first time within the next few hours. The river is expected to crest again on Monday, according to predictions from the National Weather Service.

The numbers provided may not be exact due to a river sensor in a tributary of the Little Sioux, Mill Creek, is submerged in water and currently unable to give proper readings.

Manual readings provided to the National Weather Service by Rick Angell and David Boothby have enabled the National Weather Service to make a model. This model shows that the water will drop a bit overnight Saturday night but begin to rise slowly Sunday night into Monday.

The river is currently predicted to crest around 27.5 feet. This increase of water is due to water from Spencer and the Lakes entering the area.

Additionally, Cherokee County Emergency Management announced that the Cherokee Community Center is open to those who would like to evacuate their homes.
