'My sister-in-law asked me to change my baby's name - it's the same as her bully'

An 8-month pregnant woman has found herself in a bit of a pickle after finally settling on a baby name.

The mom-to-be took to Reddit to share her predicament , revealing that she and her husband had decided to keep their chosen name , Shawn, a secret until recently when they shared it with his family.

However, the name reveal was met with disapproval and awkward silence .

"My in-laws got a little quiet for a moment before my [mother-in-law] asked if there were any other options we'd considered. We took forever to pick a name, Shawn is the only one we could agree on," she wrote.

The reason for the frosty reception?

Her husband's younger sister, Ashley, who is 17, had been severely bullied by a boy named Shawn at school and online throughout 2020 and into 2021, leading her to switch schools entirely.

"It got awkward after that, there wasn't much else to say and dinner ended quickly after. My MIL texted me and my husband again and again to ask us to find a new name for Ashley's sake," she added.

Despite not wanting to change the name, the expectant mother is now worried about how it will reflect on her if she doesn't. She and her husband were unaware of Ashley's bullying history until that moment.

Reddit users weighed in on the situation, with many advising her to reconsider the name. One user pointed out that her future child would likely have to hear about the bully.

"I wouldn't want my child to have to listen to bull---- for years about how he shares a name with his aunt's bully and his mom didn't care enough about their family to pick something else."

"I fully expect that it's your son who will suffer for this choice - not you."

One voice joined in saying: "It [was] not malicious when you chose it. But knowing what you know now, would make it malicious. There are millions of names, I'd pick another."

A different perspective found the situation slightly amusing as Shawn is not a particularly unique name.

"Is this really a hill you and your husband are willing to die on? It doesn't sound like there is a special meaning behind the name."
