JIM THORPE, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Mauch Chunk Lake Park in the Poconos has been a popular place to cool off.

Hundreds spent the day there at the beach, trying to get some relief from the hot and humid temperatures.

Clear, cold, refreshing bodies of water were enjoyed by hundreds saturday at mauch chunk lake beach park in the poconos.

“It’s good there’s places to come here and cool off and enjoy,” said Carl Nalichowski from Allentown.

Nalichowski was there with his family for the first time, trying to get relief from the scourching 90 degree temperatures across pennsylvania.

“We were just looking for something to do on the hot day something different and somewhat local. We had plans to go somewhere in jersey, but it’s suppose to be raining over there so we found this and thought we’d give it a shot,” explained Nalichowski.

Another with a similar plan was this couple.

“We wanted a beach trip and neither of us felt comfortable driving to new jersey and thought this was perfect. It was an hour 20 mins or so,” stated Ashlee Schafer from Pennsburg.

Plenty of hydration and cooling snacks were there to go around, and activities like kayaking, tanning and relaxing were enjoyed for hours.

“Nice to finally cool down. I’ve been having 100% fun,” added Miles Cuevas from Nesquehoning.

“It’s a nice place to make friends,” said Violet Nalichowski from Allentown.

And with all the fun and cooling down going on here in carbon county, park rangers are making sure there are enough life guards and safety on deck.

“Safety first. We change shifts at 3:00 p.m., some will come in and then about I think 6:00 p.m. We have one on up until most of the night,” explained Park Ranger Ronald Perry.

“Kayakers are out further there and they have a little roped off area for the swimmers,” added Aiden Voth from Girardville.

Swimming hours are from 11am-7pm daily. The park charges an admission fee, and season passes are available. There’s free admission for children under three, anyone 65 and older, or those who are disabled.
