NEW POLL: Biden’s Massive Lead Over Trump With Young Voters Has a Possible Vulnerability

A CBS News/YouGov poll found President Joe Biden holding a massive lead over Donald Trump among young voters, but many of those voters are less committed than older voting groups.

The survey , released Sunday, founds Biden with 61% support among voters under 30 compared to Trump’s 38%. The 23% lead is an improvement from an April Harvard poll focused on young voters, though the president still held a 13% lead in that poll .

The CBS poll comes amid Biden facing widespread protests over the Israel-Hamas war, with some within his own party demanding a ceasefire. The president has raised alarms about civilian casualties in Gaza, but continued to back Israel’s actions as an effort to defend themselves following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack .

One possible vulnerability to Biden among young voters comes down to turnout. Voters under 30 are typically less committed to showing up to vote than older generations, but the new poll found a drop in commitment even from 2020. Among young voters who cast a ballot in 2020, only 75% of those are committed to doing so again in November.

The data found 59% of voters under the age of 30 are committed to “definitely” voting, while 71% of voters between the ages of 30 and 44 are equally committed. Those numbers go up along with the ages with three quarters of voters 45-64 being committed to voting and 87% of voters 65 and older being committed.

Young voters listed the economy, abortion, climate change, and race and diversity as their most important issues.

The CBS/YouGov poll was conducted among approximately 2,500 voters — more than 740 ages 18-29 — from across the country from June 17-21. The margin of error overall for the data is 2.8%, while the margin of error for the sample of adults aged 18-29 rises to 5.2%.
