Granville County Public Schools was awarded the Digital Champion Grant June 18.

This grant, which totaled $400,000, was written in partnership with the Granville County Library System. The federal American Rescue Plan Act funds the grant program to expand digital equity programming and advance digital inclusion and opportunity across North Carolina.

“This is a perfect example of school-community collaboration and partnership,” said GCPS Superintendent Stan Winborne. “These funds will go a long way to helping our students, families and community members have access to the technology tools they need for our modern world.  It makes me proud to see us working together toward the same goals.”

The grant funds that GCPS will receive from the N.C. Department of Information Technology’s Office of Digital Equity and Literacy will help people from target populations identified in the Digital Equity Act. The majority of these funds will go towards new student Chromebooks, but will also include device checkout through the Granville County Library System, mobile high speed Starlink internet access for their rural branches, and it will offer digital literacy training at our senior centers and other community locations led by GCPS student interns.

Will Robinson, director of Granville County Library System, also expressed enthusiasm for the partnership.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to partner with GCPS,” Robinson said. “The Digital Champion Grant will significantly strengthen our ability to serve the community of Granville County. This funding will allow us to expand our digital resources, ensuring that all patrons and students have access to essential technology and online information regardless of their background or financial situation. By bridging the digital divide, we empower our residents with the tools they need for education, employment, and personal growth. This grant is a major step forward in our mission to provide equitable access to knowledge and resources for everyone in Granville County.”
