Ralph Ruark found dead inside Maryland Prison

An 80-year-old inmate, Ralph Ruark, was found dead at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland, on Saturday, June 22, 2024. The incident is currently being investigated as a potential homicide by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit.

Ruark was declared dead by the correctional facility's emergency medical personnel around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The incident is being investigated by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services' Internal Investigative Unit who contacted the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit at approximately 4:10 p.m. to join the investigation.

The cause of Ruark's death is still under investigation, with the State Police Homicide Unit leading the inquiry.

Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be presented to the Allegany County State's Attorney's Office for review

Ruark's body was transferred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

As of now, authorities have not released any details about the circumstances surrounding Ruark's death. The investigation is ongoing, and more information may become available as the case progresses. The incident has drawn attention due to the age of the deceased inmate and the potential classification of the case as a homicide within a maximum-security state prison.
