There is something particularly special, weighty and almost magical about being given the opportunity to learn more about the people who have guided our country over the past two-and-a-half centuries. From shocking secrets of their past to what really happened before, during and after the assassinations that took four of them from us, and their day-to-day life in the White House, movies about presidents are captivating.
Here we take a look at some of the most moving and fascinating movies about Presidents.
7. W (2008): Movies About Presidents
Oliver Stone, the director of Platoon and JFK , among many others, delves into the life of George W. Bush, Jr. and his journey to The White House in this bio-film. In it, we see a Bush ( Josh Brolin ) who has always strived to get out of his congressman father's shadow, but struggled to do so.
He attempted to run an oil company, but failed. He tried baseball, but that didn't work out either, because he kept falling victim to his alcoholism. Soon, though, conquered that disease and Bush Jr. found himself drawn into politics, everything changing for both him and America.
Actor Woody Harrelson brings filmgoers into the world of Lyndon B. Johnson, allowing us — via his portrayal — to experience his remarkable political journey. Johnson started as a senator, but soon rose to power, gaining the position of Senate Majority Leader before becoming The Vice President of the United States. But following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Johnson finds himself in the one place he never thought possible: the Oval Office.
5. All The President's Men (1976): Movies About Presidents
Ever wonder what really happened amidst the Watergate Scandal, and to president Richard M. Nixon? Well, this movie starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman explores just that! The plot follows Bob Woodward (Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Hoffman), two rival journalists at The Washington Post, who team up to investigate the connection between the burglar who broke into Democratic Party Headquarters and the White House. And no one, not even President Nixon, is prepared for what they find. This film won four Oscars.
Watch President Abraham Lincoln come to life in this Oscar-winning effort. The Civil War is raging and President Lincoln ( Daniel Day-Lewis ) is doing everything he can to stop it, including pushing the 13th Amendment (which outlaws slavery) into place. But the Confederacy vehemently opposes this and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep their slaves — even if it means the assassination of the president. Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones also star.
