    Senior spotlight

    Meals at senior activity centers will increase in price from $6 to $7 per person per meal effective July 1. Meals will still be by donation for those aged 60 and older.

    Zumba Gold will be held 12:30 p.m. Mondays at the Loffler Senior Activity Center. Enjoy an aerobic dance class using music with a Latin beat. Fitness card required.

    Geri-fit will be held 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through July at Loffler Senior Activity Center. Geri-fit is an evidence-based health program and chronic disease self-management support program. Geri-fit uses a set of light dumbbells, a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout. Fitness equipment is supplied.

    A bereavement support group will be held 10 a.m. at the Loffler Senior Activity Center on the third Thursday of the month beginning June 20. Share grief experiences and learn new ways to cope while meeting friends. Facilitated by Hospice of St. Mary’s Bereavement Coordinator Dr. Patricia Watson. No need to register, drop-ins welcome.

    A sweetheart cupcake decorating class will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at Northern Senior Activity Center. Rebecca of Sweetheart Cupcakes will demonstrate a variety of techniques to decorate cupcakes for events, holidays, or birthdays. Participants will complete two cupcakes with a July 4th theme.     USA flag history and protocols will be discussed 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, at the Northern Senior Activity Center. Mike Barbour of Southern Maryland American Legion Post 221 in Avenue will give a presentation on the U.S. flag, including fun facts and more. Free patriotic magnet for all attendees.     A four-part Zen Barre class will be held 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays on July 8, July 15, July 22 and July 29 at the Northern Senior Activity Center. Zen Barre is an effective choice for building muscular strength, particularly in legs, glutes, and core, while helping with balance and flexibility. The low-impact exercise improves bone density and metabolism and stretches muscles and ligaments to boost mental wellness by coordinating music and movements. Participants must be able to exercise standing up. The cost is $38 for all sessions.     Massage therapy will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of the month beginning July 9 at the Loffler Senior Activity Center. Renika Watson is a licensed massage therapist and owner of Renika Marie’s Therapeutic Massage with specialty in Swedish and deep tissue massage. Registration required.     All centers will be closed Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day, but are scheduled to reopen 8:30 a.m. on July 5.

    Drummercize will be held 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through August at Calvert Pines Senior Center. The engaging fitness class combines the rhythmic beats of drumming with low-impact aerobic exercise and enhances coordination and boosts cardiovascular health. No drumming or exercise experience necessary.

    Nutrition Education: “Trending Nutrition Research” will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Southern Pines Senior Center. Discover the latest in nutrition science with a registered dietician, who will break down recent studies and offer tips for healthier eating. Registration required. Call 410-586-2748.

    Play Mahjongg 9:30 a.m. Mondays at North Beach Senior Center. The game helps to sharpen the mind and enhance strategic thinking. For all experience levels.

    Stepping On will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays from Aug. 6 through Sept. 17 at Calvert Pines Senior Center. The free evidence-based falls prevention program is designed to help avoid hazards and falls. Participants should not use a walker or wheelchair full-time or fallen more than six times in the past year. Registration required. Call 410-535-4606, ext. 8751.
