When it comes to 'flipping' IKEA furniture, the most important thing to keep in mind is to think outside the box. And not just the box that the IKEA furniture comes in, mind you, but to use your imagination and picture what something could be rather than just what it is.

Case in point, this stunning flip pulled off by TikTok creator Dalia Aly . She somehow saw an Askholmen flower box and decided, 'Yep, that will make the perfect ottoman,' and not only that, she actually pulled the look off! Let's explore how Dalia turned a humble flower box into a chic piece of furniture that would look great in any (hint, YOUR) home.

When Dalia saw the IKEA Askholmen flower box, she saw something gorgeous, but not necessarily as it was. Instead, she saw potential, and that potential was in becoming a super cute ottoman . The first step to doing so was to take the flower box home and get it nice and sanded. After everything was sanded, she conditioned the individual pieces, then went back in with her favorite stain to help deepen the color, taking it from light pine to something a bit richer and darker.

To help make the piece look more 'naturally' scalloped, Dalia added a similarly colored piece of wood on the inside of the box to give it an even more three-dimensional look. This step might seem small, but it adds a lot of depth and character to the finished product.

Then came the cushioned part, which is arguably the most important part of the ottoman transformation. Dalia needed to add a piece that could be weight-bearing, so she got some thick plywood cut to size. This got inserted before she cut some foam cushioning to fit into the gap. She added some gorgeous fabric and simply laid it over the top before stapling the fabric into place right onto the plywood using a heavy-duty stapler. Make sure you pull the fabric really tight so you don't have any bunches or wrinkles; nobody wants a lumpy ottoman!

The end result is truly, as Dalia points out, an upscale look and one of our favorite IKEA flips in a long time! Who would have thought that a basic flower box could turn into such a stylish piece of furniture? This hack is not only innovative but also practical. It's a perfect example of how a little creativity and effort can go a long way. Next time you walk through the aisles of IKEA, try to see beyond the labels and think about what each piece could become. And if you're feeling inspired, why not give it a try? You might just end up with a unique piece of furniture that not only looks fantastic but also has a story to tell.
