Ragdoll Cat Scaring Off Deer in Her Yard Wins the Title of 'Best Guard Kitty'

Cats aren't often thought of as guard animals. They're smaller than dogs (most of the time, at least), and they don't make as much noise. Even cat people often find it hard to believe that a cat would be able to take on an intruder.

At least that was the case before Saturday, June 22nd. On that day, a Ragdoll cat's outside time was interrupted by a few deer, and he let the world know how he feels about it:

Marlea Hope is lucky she had Popsicle there to defend her. I'm sure those deer had terrible intentions...

Popsicle is a very lucky kitty. He has a backyard and a mom who doesn't mind paying attention while he runs around! She has total freedom to roam, which is only fair - he has a German Shepherd sister and a Husky brother. If they get outside time, so should he!

There's one problem: Marlea also has a few regular visitors . She has a couple of deer that pass through her yard regularly, and while Delta (GSD) and Apollo (Husky) have been trained not to mind them, Popsicle has not had that. When he sees Bucky and his friends, he goes right after them.

Deer Can be Violent When Provoked

Popsicle was not harmed in the making of this video, and he's extremely lucky for that. Bucky and company just took off, but if they hadn't, he could've been seriously hurt. When deer feel cornered and don't think they can get away, they tend to bite the threat and try to kick it away.

Deer are not small animals; the average buck weighs around 150 pounds, and their kick packs about 700PSI of force . That's enough to hurt or even fatally wound a human, let alone a small cat like Popsicle.

Luckily for him, the deer in this video were just passing through like they normally do. It's not mating season and Bucky/his friends didn't seem particularly interested in a fight. Had there been a worthy doe or even some fawns, though, he may have toast.

If you're ever outside with your cat or dog and they have a close encounter with a deer , the best thing to do is quietly bring them inside or lead them away. You don't want to startle the deer, and you don't want to risk your pets getting hurt! I do wonder if Bucky and his friends will be coming back; though; they may need to be wary of Popsicle's wrath!
