JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The man accused of killing two people near the Hal’s St. Paddy’s Parade in March 2023 has been sentenced.

Jordan Cummins was sentenced to life in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) on Monday, June 24. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Cummins has been transported to MDOC custody following his sentence. He is being held at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF).

The jury found Cummins guilty on two counts of first-degree murder on Wednesday, June 19. He was convicted of killing Joshua Spann, 27, and Jubilee Simpkins, 23, near the parade in 2023.

During the trial, Kam Owens claimed to see Cummins striking his girlfriend, Jenny Lukens, in the face. Owens said he got out of his car, went over to the Malibu and punched Cummins. He said Cummins then reached behind the seat of the car, pulled out a gun and began firing.

Lukens was also arrested in connection to the case and charged with hindering prosecution. She testified during the trial that Cummins did not hit her while they were sitting in the vehicle. She said Cummins hit the back of the seat and punched the dashboard, but she was not physically assaulted.

The state cross-examined Lukens and asked about inconsistencies in her story. She claimed she saw Spann pull a gun first.

During his testimony , Cummins said he feared for his life the day of the shooting. He claimed he asked Lukens to put his gun in her purse. Cummins also said that he hit the dashboard a few times, but he was not abusive toward Lukens.

Cummins attorney, Bill Kellum, plans to file an appeal in the case.
