(LOOTPRESS) – The 2003 fantasy comedy film Freaky Friday is set to receive the sequel treatment over 20 years after the film’s initial release.

The film, based on the 1972 novel of the same name, stars actresses Jamie Lee Curtis and Linsday Lohan in leading roles as a mother-daughter duo who mysteriously swap bodies after receiving two fortune cookies.

Walt Disney Studios announced the planned sequel on Monday and indicated that the two star leads would be returning to their respective roles. The studio took to social media this week to share a promotional photo of Lohan and Curtis, each seated beneath the nameplate displayed on the other’s respective trailer.

“The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!,” read the announcement shared by Walt Disney Studios. “The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!”

As indicated by the announcement, work is currently underway on the film, which is expected to see release next year.

The original Freaky Friday saw an August 2003 theatrical release and brought in $160.8 million in the box office on a $26 million budget.

Rumblings of a potential sequel to the film have been ongoing for years, with Jamie Lee Curtis having expressed interest in being involved for a sequel as recently as 2022. It is unclear at the time of writing how heavily, if at all, the upcoming sequel will draw from the original source material for its story.
