An 18-year-old woman was killed in a crash Sunday morning in Washington County.
The crash happened just after 3 a.m. along Interstate 70 near the West Virginia state line.
The Washington County coroner said Kaylee Ogea of Shawboro, N.C., lost control of her vehicle, which then rolled over. She was taken to UPMC Washington Hospital, where she died of her injuries.
The coroner said it was not known if Ogea was wearing a seat belt.
Ogea was a rising sophomore on the Robert Morris rowing team, who joined the program in January.
“Kaylee was not only a talented rower but also a wonderful teammate and friend. Her vivacious personality brought positivity to the boathouse and the Erg room environment,” RMU rowing coach Robert Weber said in a statement. “Her legacy of hard work and kindness will always be remembered. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to those who knew and loved her.”
She also was an ROTC cadet, associated with RMU’s Women’s Leadership and Mentorship Program, as well as a member of the women’s Division 2 club hockey team, Robert Morris officials said.
“Kaylee’s dedication, leadership and spirit were evident in all that she did. Kaylee’s loss is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing her,” Robert Morris President Dr. Michelle Patrick said. “She was a cherished member of our university family, and she will be sorely missed.”
Added Chris King, vice president and director of athletics: “Kaylee Ogea was a dedicated student-athlete whose spirit left a lasting impression on our athletics community. Her loss is deeply felt and our hearts go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.”
