'My wife wants to name our baby after a beloved Harry Potter character - I think it's dumb'

The Harry Potter series has made some names instantly recognizable, ruining the name for future babies.

One bloke on Reddit is in a bit of a pickle because his missus has picked a name from the wizarding world for their unborn son. They had a pact before tying the knot that she'd get to name their first son while he'd have dibs on naming their first daughter.

Now she's expecting with twins - a boy and a girl - they're sticking to their guns. But when he heard the moniker she's set on, he was gutted, worried it might lead to a bit of ribbing for the young'un down the line.

He posted: "It sounds really stupid, and it's absolutely the kind of name that will get our son bullied. I immediately vetoed it, but my wife said I can't because that wasn't our agreement."

His wife is dead set on naming their son Neville after her most-loved Harry Potter character. He asked her why she was so wedded to the name.

She sats it's all about a character she felt a connection with in her favorite childhood book. But for him, that doesn't make the name any less daft.

In response, he suggested a daft name of his own.

"I said fine, then I may as well name our daughter Hortensia Beerbong the Third. It sounds just as dumb. She told me I couldn't do that, and I just said why not? It's my choice. That was the agreement."

Ever since that fateful decision, the pair has been locking horns. With a business journey planned the very week she's expected to give birth, he's worried she might seize the moment to have their baby and pick the names on her own.

He's even asked his brother to keep an eye on her to prevent this scenario.

The online community chimed in with the consensus that they're both blowing things out of proportion. The Harry Potter name? Neville, though traditional, hardly stands out as outrageous.

One contributor remarked: "It's not like she's calling the kid Albus Severus, Neville is a real name that's just a bit classic (ie, old). It's not going to get the kid bullied anymore than any other name."

Others pointed out the original pact on naming rights was cooked for trouble. Now, threats fly and ultimatums drop, sparking doubts about the relationship's direction, especially if she's contemplating solo childbirth and dual baby-naming duties.

Another vented their dismay, saying, "You can't respect her choice in names? She might take off over a name dispute? Your poor children, they're gonna have little kids for parents! "

"This was a dumb agreement to come to as it is virtually guaranteed to lead to some sort of disagreement. Now there are threats and ultimatums and I question where this relationship is headed if she's willing to take off and have the twins by herself and name both."
