When you first come home after a day out, you can expect them to be waiting by the door for you, tail wagging, excited to see you again. Most of the time, all you have to do is stand there and let them get it all out.

On Sunday, June 23rd, one St. Bernard took that to a whole new level, though. As excited as he was to see his mama, he was also not at all willing to get up:

Midas from Saint in the City is so funny. I love the way his tail falls out of the door. If I was a burglar, I'd forget to burgle in favor of petting him!

Midas, a Chicago based St. Bernard , has three incredible talents: being loud, being large, and being lazy. He loves to lie down and get belly rubs, as we can see in the video. He's welcome to sit on the couch or the bed, but he sometimes chooses the floor. Lots of dogs do that; they like the cool floor against their skin.

Midas' reasoning for lying down in front of the door is unclear. He was keeping the door shut so no one could get in, which is a great security defense, but it also meant mom couldn't get in around him without squeezing! By the end of the video, he still hasn't gotten up!

Should You Crate Your Dog When You're Not Home?

Midas was not crated, obviously, because he was blocking the door with his big tail. The divide between crating and not crating dogs when you're gone is about 50/50 , honestly. Some claim dogs don't need it, while others say they'd never do anything else.

Whether you'll want to crate your dog depends a lot on their personality and your needs. It's a good idea to crate train a puppy no matter what; it's better to have the skill and not need it. Crating your dog while you're gone is good because it :

    1. Keeps them from chewing up your furniture.
    2. Prevents accidents on blankets/couches/rugs.
    3. Keeps them from going to the window and barking.
    4. Eliminates the possibility of them eating something they shouldn't.

If you're going to be gone for more than a few hours , crating is not the best; your dog needs to get up and move around, play, use the bathroom, etc.,. In this case, it's better to opt for a hired pet-sitter or even a doggy daycare center. Not that a pet-sitter could get in with Midas blocking the door!
