UNION, WV (WVNS) – Look out Monroe County. The Monroe County STEM Bus is coming to a location near you.

The Monroe County STEM Bus is making stops throughout the county to help local kids keep their brains active over summer break.

On the bus, kids can do science, technology, engineering and math activities with all different types of Legos, robots, and different games.

Every child who visits the STEM bus receives a book and a snack for free.

The teacher for the STEM Bus, Janet Haag, told 59News what the bus hopes to bring to youngsters across Monroe County this summer.

“We do it to encourage the kids to keep engaging in STEM activities throughout the year,” said Haag. “It’s a literacy program as well, because we give away a free book to every child that comes.”

The STEM Bus is free for all kids and parents who want to attend.

The bus runs for 6 weeks during the summer. It operates two to three times a week from 10 a.m. to noon.

On June 24, 2024 the bus set up shop at the Monroe County Board of Education Bus Garage.

Haag also explained why they chose to go out into the community and bring these lessons out on the road. “There’s a lot of kids that won’t have these opportunities except during the school year. When you’ve got a full classroom full of kids, it’s hard to pull out some of the robots and the other things that they can’t normally play with. Also, internet is not something that everybody has in this county. Quite a few of these things do use the internet. So, we’re able to bring things like that to the kids that they normally wouldn’t have.

The bus’s next stop will be the Peterstown Public Library on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 10 a.m. to noon.
