When it comes to home gardening, some of the hardest things to deal with are the losses you suffer from pest damage. Not only can it be frustrating (hey, we get it, you worked hard to grow those tomatoes), but it can also be a reminder that if you want to benefit from the ecosystem in your yard by way of pollinators, you have to become part of it, which sometimes means dealing with the occasional hungry critter.
That being said, you don't have to completely sacrifice your garden to the critter gods. Instead, you can try an all natural pest repellant that one home gardener swears by.
Garden pests are an inevitable “brother ewww” moment for all gardeners! 😅🐛 There are so many natural ways to protect your garden harvest! One of our favorites is with a garlic pepper spray! 🧄🌶️ ✨ Simply blend 7 cloves of garlic and 2 jalapeño or serrano peppers with a quart of water and a few tablespoons of natural dish soap. Pour into a spray bottle and give your plants a mist in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid scorching them by the sun! ☀️ The soap suds will help the solution stick to the plants, and the spicy kick from the garlic and pepper will deter critters from getting their fill of the garden buffet. 🤭 Visit our blog for more tips and tricks for your garden! It keeps both vampires and unwanted suitors away, so it makes sense that garlic can also work wonders on keeping certain bugs from getting too close to your garden. According to @chestnutschoolherbs , this garlic pepper mix works wonders on plants. She says she uses 7 cloves of garlic and two jalapeño or serrano peppers mixed with some water and all natural dish soap.
The result is a concoction that no bug can abide, apparently, and it helps keep Juliet's garden critter-free.
If you want to go the natural method, you can blend some green onions up into a mix and spray it onto your plants. According to this woman , it is an especially distasteful combination for slugs , who won't go near her leafy greens after she's applied it.
Use Diatomaceous Earth To Get Rid of Bugs
Diatomaceous earth (AKA: DE) is a popular non-toxic pest control treatment. Not only can it be super easy to use because bugs don't need to ingest it in order for it to work, but all they need to do is come into contact with it to feel its effects.
But, unlike the onion spray that targets slugs , DE can't distinguish between different bugs, and it may actually keep those beneficial critters (like your local pollinators) from visiting your garden and helping it to thrive.
So, user beware when it comes to which pest control methods you employ in your garden.
Homemade Pest Control Keeps Garden Looking Good
When it comes to the different pest control methods we've seen over the years, this one sounds like we'll definitely give a try. Worse case scenario we've sacrificed a few cloves of garlic and peppers for the project. Best case scenario, it will help keep our gardens looking its best while still allowing those beneficial pollinators to pay us (and our flowers) a visit whenever they want.
