HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — A Hidalgo County inmate died after he was found unresponsive in his cell Monday morning.

At 12:58 p.m. on Monday, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Detention staff responded to a medical emergency call where 58-year-old inmate Juan Andres Guerra collapsed and was unresponsive in his cell, according to a news release.

Guerra was transported to Edinburg Regional Medical Center where he died. Guera suffered from pre-existing medical conditions and was on medication.

“As per Texas Jain Standards regulations, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office must outsource all in-custody death investigations to an outside law enforcement agency. The Texas Rangers have been called to conduct the in-custody death investigation,” the release stated.

A Justice of the Peace ordered an autopsy, which said Guerra died of medical complications.
