MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WRBL ) – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama said a former Alabama sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of beating a detained individual in the head and causing multiple injuries.

According to the attorney’s office, 33-year-old Blake Hicks received 29 months in prison along with three years of supervised release for depriving an arrestee of their civil rights.

Based on court records and statements made during his trial, Hicks used “unreasonable force” against the person who was detained. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Hicks went as far as punching and kicking the person in the head while they were already handcuffed and lying on the ground debilitated.

Following the incident, the arrestee suffered from a broken cheekbone, concussion, and lacerations.

The FBI Mobile Field Office investigated the case and Trial Attorney Laura-Kate Berstein, Special Litigation Counsel Michael J. Songer with the Civil Rights Division prosecuted the case along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Counts with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama.
