Every time we go on holiday it's to a Greek island - and here are the best four (but if you're thinking of visiting Mykonos, don't bother!)

There are 227 inhabited Greek islands and plenty of magnificent cities and villages on the mainland, so there are lots of destinations to choose from when visiting this historic and beautiful country. While you're likely familiar with the city of iconic Athens and its spectacular museums, the popular beaches on the island of Mykonos, and Santorini (which can get really overcrowded and, thus, expensive), there are so many underrated options. One destination with enough to do for a whole week at least (or maybe even a lifetime) is the island of Crete.

There are so many gorgeous islands in Greece. You could visit the vibrant island of Skopelos, the bucket list island for fans of "Mamma Mia!," or Alonissos, the gorgeous Greek island that's a great alternative to overcrowded Santorini, though that's also worth a visit. You could pick any number of beautiful destinations, including the pretty-yet-packed Mykonos, or the city of Athens, which is full of ancient wonders like the Acropolis, but maybe not the most relaxing. However, when travel expert Rick Steves wants to visit his favorite Greek island, it's one that is quieter than the others, despite being a mere two-hour ferry ride from Athens. Steves' favorite spot is the island of Hydra (which you may also see written as Idra).

It's fair to say Greece has been discovered. With its iconic whitewashed architecture, ancient ruins, and picturesque beaches, it's a top destination for both Europeans and international travelers. So, it's not surprising that this flood of tourism has caused prices to rise and local purveyors to tack on additional 'tourist' fees. Perhaps you've heard some of the stories about visitors getting price gouged at restaurants in touristy areas of Greece. This leaves many Greece-visiting-hopefuls looking for more budget-friendly options after recognizing the high expenses associated with a stay in Mykonos or Santorini. From there, the search often leads straight to smaller islands, and in the case of the Cyclades, that search ends at the third largest island in the chain: Tinos.
